Strong National Security
Most Young Americans Do Not Qualify to Serve Our Country
Conversations about national security often focus on technology and defense spending. However, in recent years, military leaders have shed light on a lesser-known national security concern: a looming shortage of qualified Americans to fill the ranks of our armed forces. Data publicized by Mission: Readiness show that more than 70 percent of all young adults in the U.S. would not qualify for military service, as a result of educational shortcomings and a national obesity epidemic, among other factors.
Council for a Strong America’s leaders are currently educating state and federal policymakers about this threat, and calling for solutions that improve education and healthy lifestyles among the next generation, such as better school nutrition and a continuum of high-quality education from the early years through college.
