Washington, D.C. – Today, Mission: Readiness congratulates the Honorable Tom Vilsack on news that President-elect Biden will nominate him to again serve as U.S. Secretary of Agriculture.
“On behalf of the nearly 800 retired admirals and generals of Mission: Readiness, I’m pleased to congratulate Secretary Vilsack on his planned nomination to return to USDA. As Secretary of Agriculture, Tom Vilsack was a champion in the fight to combat the childhood obesity crisis that disqualifies one in three young Americans from military service,” said Ben Goodman, National Director of Mission: Readiness. “If confirmed, Mission: Readiness looks forward to working with the Secretary to strengthen federal nutrition programs that are integral to America’s national security and recovery from the COVID-19 pandemic.”
As Secretary of Agriculture, Vilsack played an instrumental role in the successful implementation of the landmark Healthy, Hunger-Free Kids Act of 2010, the first major school meal reform legislation in three decades. In 2018, Vilsack and Mission: Readiness were awarded the first-ever Jean Mayer Prize for Excellence in Nutrition Science and Policy by Tufts University for work to advance the legislation.
Vilsack has also served in an advisory capacity to Mission: Readiness, as a member of the Senior Policy Council of its parent organization, Council for a Strong America.
