Lawmakers in West Virginia will likely face a budget shortfall in 2017, and increased pressure to cut spending. Our members in West Virginia are urging policymakers to continue to prioritize improvements to the state’s education system, which ranks 46th in the nation in student achievement. However, the state’s education system has made progress in recent years. West Virginia has one of the best preschool programs in the country, and lawmakers recently decided to uphold high standards for the state’s K-12 schools, which leaders say will lead to better-educated students and a stronger workforce.
