Last week, members of the Mission: Readiness staff attended the U.S. Naval Institute’s 2017 Naval History Conference at the U.S. Naval Academy in Annapolis, Maryland. This year’s conference focused on the proper role of retired flag and general officers in the political arena and politicization of the military.

Over the course of the day, attendees, including members of the public, hundreds of Naval Academy midshipmen, and a strong contingent of cadets from West Point, had the opportunity to hear a variety of perspectives from distinguished retired military leaders and scholars. One highlight was an inspiring interview with Senator John McCain.

In his comments, Senator McCain spoke warmly about his time at the Naval Academy. Speaking directly to the midshipmen in attendance, the distinguished Navy veteran said:

“To my young friends in the brigade of midshipmen, you are truly blessed because you are exposed to the honor and integrity and courage of centuries of people who have served this country in the United States Navy. Just a ‘casual walk around the Yard,’ as we say, and you’ll see the names that really were the major factors–the leaders that were the major factors in making America the great nation, and the last century called the American century.”

In that moment, and in reflection since, we have been reminded of how fortunate we are to work personally with so many distinguished U.S. Navy Admirals. Each of our members has not only made an incredible contribution to protecting and defending our freedoms, but has inspired thousands of others to do the same.

As we mark the Navy’s 242nd Birthday, the entire Mission: Readiness team is inspired to help give more children the opportunity to do the same.
