Lieutenant General John A. Lejeune was often referred to as “the greatest of all Leathernecks.”

In 1921, the General issued Marine Corps Order No. 47, directing that an annual message commemorating the creation and history of the Corps be shared with all Marines each November 10. “The term Marine,“ General Lejeune’s order reads, “has come to signify all that is highest in military efficiency and soldierly virtue.”

Having served as the 13th Commandant of the U.S. Marine Corps, the Commanding General of the Marine Barracks at Quantico, and in retirement, as Superintendent of the Virginia Military Institute, it’s safe to say that General Lejeune knew something about preparing young Americans for success.

Lejeune once said, “Leadership is the sum of those qualities of intellect, human understanding, and moral character that enables a person to inspire and control a group of people successfully.”

Intellect, human understanding, and moral character–along with a commitment to physical fitness and nutrition–are qualities we should strive to instill in all future leaders, military or civilian.

Today, our Mission: Readiness staff will join Marines around the world in reading General Lejeune’s account of the rich history of the Marine Corps. We also recommit to ensuring that America’s youth are citizen-ready to help in continuing on the Corps’ illustrious legacy.
