Ohio Report Release Event Shines Spotlight on Childhood Obesity Challenge

The report detailed the connection between national security and childhood nutrition in Ohio

On May 22, Mission: Readiness virtually convened nutrition and military experts to discuss the impact of poor nutrition among Ohio children on our national security. More information about the report may be found here.

This video features highlights of the event, including Mission: Readiness member Maj. Gen. Paul J. Sullivan (Ret.), USAF, discussing the added urgency around childhood nutrition in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic. Other key speakers included Nichelle Shaskus, Executive Director of the Ohio Afterschool Network, and Shannon Amos, VP of Programs, Children’s Hunger Alliance.

The speakers made powerful points about the long-term impact that improved nutrition and avoiding obesity can have on young people in Ohio and beyond. In particular, they focused on how summer and school meals programs are of heightened importance during this pandemic. Full highlights below.
