Mentorship Program Celebrates Students’ Graduation

For years, staff from the Nassau County District Attorney’s Office have taken on a special role in their community: as mentors to 4th and 5th-grade students at the Drexel Avenue School.

This year, to mark the program’s completion, the DA’s office published a touching video celebrating the mentees’ hard work and joyful presence throughout their time together. The video displays heartfelt messages that each mentor wrote to their mentee on the backside of a cut-out green heart.

On top of that, on June 17th, mentors and graduates of the year-long program celebrated with a socially distant send-off. As part of this graduation, the DA’s office gifted each of the 13 mentees a new Kindle and gave them unlimited, free access to the library – so they can read as much as they’d like over the summer and beyond. Fight Crime: Invest in Kids member District Attorney Madelaine Singas explained to students in the graduation video, “You can meet the most exciting people, and visit the most exciting places, just by picking up a book. So please keep reading.”

Assistant District Attorney and Co-Chair of Fight Crime: Invest in Kids New York Rene Fiechter said that the celebration served as “a bit of cheer during an otherwise bleak time.” We’d agree. Congratulations to the graduates, and thank you to the Nassau County District Attorney’s Office for the important work you do in your community!
