SANTA FE, NM- Council for a Strong America released a new report at the state capitol building detailing the critical importance of home visiting for parents in New Mexico. The report, “Cultivating Success through Evidence-Based Home Visiting Programs in New Mexico”, details how voluntary home visiting programs help improve the economy, increase public safety, and make our nation more secure.
For new and expectant parents who face barriers or challenges that may limit their capacity to provide the needed nurturing and environmental conditions, voluntary home visiting programs offer support and resources—such as prenatal care, parental coaching, and access to community support systems. Home visiting programs have myriad positive impacts, including: increasing family self-sufficiency; cultivating children’s academic success; preventing child maltreatment and child health problems; curbing substance misuse; and reducing mental health issues. Given these impacts, home visiting programs can bolster public safety, economic prosperity, and national security in the long-run.
At the event, members of Council for a Strong America’s membership groups Fight Crime: Invest in Kids, ReadyNation, and Mission: Readiness shared the report and met with members of the state legislature to discuss ways to help bolster home visiting programs in New Mexico. The presenters were Adan Mendoza, Sheriff of Santa Fe County and Member of Fight Crime: Invest in Kids, Rob Black, CEO and President of the New Mexico Chamber of Commerce and Member of ReadyNation, and Mission: Readiness members Brigadier General Judy Griego, U.S. Air Force (Ret.) and Brigadier General Jack Fox, U.S. Army (Ret.).
