USC Schwarzenegger Institute National After-School Summit 2017

A Mission: Readiness member joins Arnold Schwarzenegger to highlight the importance of after-school programs

Mission: Readiness member Vice Admiral Jody Breckenridge, U.S. Coast Guard (Ret.) joined former California Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger and mayors from Charlotte, North Carolina, and Gary, Indiana, alongside other prominent after-school advocates, for a panel discussion during the National After-School Summit at the University of Southern California Schwarzenegger Institute for State and Global Policy on April 5th.

During the discussion entitled “Preparing Students for Workforce and Instilling an Entrepreneurial Spirit,” VADM Breckenridge relayed the national security relevance of expanded learning through after-school programs, which help ensure that America’s youth are academically, physically, and socially prepared to enter the workforce.

Support for expanded learning programs remains a top priority for Mission: Readiness in California. In particular, we support a $99.3 million budget augmentation for the After School Education and Safety (ASES) program, which will help keep pace with increases in costs of living and minimum wage and prevent program closings and reduced quality.
