Retired admirals and generals of Mission: Readiness visited local
schools in Hyattsville, MD; Lawrence, KS; and Hattiesburg,
MS, to get a tour of school kitchen equipment upgrades
that are helping the schools serve healthier meals. The retired military leaders also served lunch to the students and joined them in the cafeteria.
Mission: Readiness members are concerned about school nutrition because obesity is now the leading medical disqualifier from military service, with nearly 1 in 3 young Americans too heavy to serve. These school visits highlighted the importance of helping schools upgrade their kitchen facilities so they can prepare and serve healthier meals to kids.
