Statement on Child Tax Credit Proposal

Council for a Strong America President and CEO Barry Ford in response to a bipartisan legislative proposal to enhance the Child Tax Credit

Barry D. Ford, J.D.

WASHINGTON, D.C.Council for a Strong America President and CEO Barry Ford, J.D., released this statement in response to House Ways and Means Committee Chairman Jason Smith (R-MO) and Senate Finance Committee Chairman Ron Wyden’s (D-OR) bipartisan legislative proposal to enhance the Child Tax Credit (CTC):

“The Child Tax Credit is a proven tool for lifting children and families out of poverty. Research shows policies that reduce child poverty can lead to improved school performance, increased educational attainment, fewer risky behaviors, and less crime.

“The bipartisan proposal in Congress to enhance the CTC over the next three years is a step in the right direction. By expanding access to the CTC, nearly 15 million additional children will be able to benefit from the tax credit. While this proposal falls short of the enhanced CTC passed in 2021, we are pleased to see bipartisan progress being made to help children and working families.

“We thank Congressman Smith and Senator Wyden for their efforts to fight for families and are hopeful they continue to work toward an even stronger Child Tax Credit.”
